Friday Recommends #11

So it's Friday again, and that means another exciting Friday Recommends!
This is an exciting book blog hop that book bloggers can take part in once a week to share with their followers, the books that they most recommend reading!

The rules for Friday Recommends are:
  • Follow Pen to Paper as host of the meme.
  • Please consider adding the blog hop button to your blog somewhere, so others can find it easily and join in too! Help spread the word! The code will be at the bottom of the post under the linky.
  • Pick a book that you've read, and have enjoyed enough to recommend to other readers. It can be a book you've read recently, or a book you read years ago - it's up to you - but make sure you tell us why you love the book (like a mini review). You make the post as long or as short as you like.
  • Add your blog to the linky at the bottom of this post after posting your blog post.
  • Put a link back to pen to paper (http://vogue-pentopaper.blogspot.com) somewhere in your post.
  • Visit the other blogs and enjoy!

Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn
Goodreads synopsis:
Kitty Norville is a midnight-shift DJ for a Denver radio station - and a werewolf in the closet. Her new late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged is a raging success, but it's Kitty who can use some help. With one sexy werewolf-hunter and a few homicidal undead on her tail, Kitty may have bitten off more than she can chew?

I really enjoyed this - it was such a refreshing take on werewolves in the Urban Fantasy genre. Kitty is a feisty and strong-minded female protagonist, that despite all the problems facing her because of what she is, still manages to lead as close to a 'normal' life as possible. She hosts her own late-night radio show, which soon becomes an advice show for the supernaturally inclined, bringing the world of the night into clear view of the rest of the mortal world.

I really loved Kitty's character - she was quite a complex character, and I found it immediately easy to like her and sympathise with her. Even though she's faced with the threats of not only her own pack, but those from the local Vampires, she still manages to continue her radio show in defiance of their demands.
The plot is exciting enough with the supernatural politics (for want of a better phrase) flying around, but it gets more exciting still when sexy paranormal hunter, Cormac, enters the scene and sparks begin to fly. Plenty of action with a drop of romance is definitely what I like to see in the books I read - so this made for a perfectly exciting, but laid-back, easy read, which is perfect for when, like me, you're trying to escape from the huge pile of University work (or other work) that is calling your name from the corner of the room.

I have a few more in this series to read, which I'm really looking forward to. I'm hoping to read the second in this series very soon - another Christmas read, I think!

Have you read this one? What did you think? Or have you not yet read it, but I've convinced you to give it a go?
Let me know in the comments :)

It looks really interesting from the blurb and your review!
Although I think that the title and cover doesn't really catch my eye.
Wouldn't have considered picking it up without this post.
But now, it seems like something a paranormal lover cannot miss :D
Definitely looking for it next time I go to the library!

I've been into this series since it first came out and I absolutely love them all! I think the only ones I haven't read are the last 2 -- Kitty's Big Trouble & Kitty's Greatest Hits. But throughout the entire series the characters have stayed fresh and interesting and an altogether fun read!

You know. I've seen this series a handful of times but never picked it up. The name just kills me. Maybe I do need to give it a go though. I wouldn't mind a good werewolf series.

I really want to read this series, but I am a little intimidated by the number of books in the series. I will have to add it to the top of my TRB list.

I have to completely disagree with this review. The worst thing about this book for me, was the representation of wolves/werewolves. I didn't find it to be anything special, and after gritting my teeth through a bunch of wankery about "alpha" wolves and the heroine taking forever to assert herself (yeah, it was character development, but seeing her start out so weak, she only manages to acquire half a level in bad-ass by the end of the book), I'm not a fan, sorry. The setting isn't interesting or original enough for me to wonder what else is happening in other corners of the world, and that and interesting characters are my main reason for reading anything in the urban fantasy genre.

I really liked this book too. It felt like some kind of a chicklit with a mix of paranormalcy. It worked! It was fun and easy to read. I have yet to read the rest of this series.

Great review! I read this and thought it was great! I liked that Kitty didn't let anyone stop her from doing what she wanted! I agree with you that it was a perfect combination of plenty of action with just a touch of romance! I can't wait to read more in the series!
